Photograph of the Barracks and Clifton Terrace, Winchester

Taken about 1890

The image shows an informally posed group in a small area of the extensive parade ground at the Barracks in Winchester. In 1894 there was a severe fire at the King's House, the quarters for unmarried men in the depots of the Hampshire Regiment and the Rifle Brigade, and major rebuilding followed at the turn of the century. The site continued as a barracks until the 1980s.

Beyond the parade ground is Clifton Terrace, built in the 1840s and '50s. This substantial row of houses, which is reminiscent of the fashionable terraces of towns like Bath and Cheltenham, was designed by the architect O B Carter, who was responsible for several buildings in Winchester in the mid-nineteenth century.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87).
