Photograph of Hursley Park, Hursley

Taken about 1870

Hursley Park near Winchester boasted a well-stocked deer park as well as fine woodland. This intriguing photograph, with the young man on the bank beside the tree apparently equipped for coppicing was, according to the album entry, taken at the 'park bank'; extensive lengths of the Park Pale are shown on present day maps of the area.

The people portrayed may be some of the children of Sir William Heathcote, the 5th Baronet, who resided at Hursley Park from 1825 to 1881.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
