Photograph of Micheldever Railway Station, Micheldever

Taken in 1873

Micheldever Station, eight miles north of Winchester, was on the London and South Western Railway. The Basingstoke to Winchester section opened in 1840, completing the line between London and Southampton.

This photograph of the station clearly shows the wide canopy which was built for the shelter of horse-drawn vehicles and their occupants in this rural area. Even the villagers had over two miles to cover in order to catch a train - the station was built well north of Micheldever.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
