Photograph of St Bartholomew's Church, Hyde, Winchester

Taken about 1880

The nineteenth century saw a gradual process of restoration to the Church of St Bartholomew, whose history stretches back to the twelfth century. Little more than the foundations of the chancel, which was blocked off from the body of the Church, remained in the 1830s when the vicar set about its rebuilding, further improvements being carried out in the 1850s. A chancel aisle was also added, the transept rebuilt, a new roof constructed and the north aisle completed by the late 1870s. It appears that the view of St Bartholomew's seen here was taken shortly after this restoration work was completed on the north side of the building.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
