Photograph of St Maurice's Church, High Street, Winchester

Taken about 1865

The enlarged Church of St Maurice was built in 1841-2 to accommodate a growing population. This image shows the south and east sides including, to the left, the Norman tower of the smaller original church on this site which was incorporated into the Victorian building. In the foreground sheep graze on the Cathedral Green and between them and the church is Market Lane. When the church was demolished in the 1950s the Norman tower with its fine south doorway was spared and is still a feature of the High Street.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
