Photograph of St Michael's Church, Bullington

Taken on 7th July, 1874

Bullington lies about eight miles north-east of Winchester. The manor was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the church is of Norman origin although the chancel was enlarged in the thirteenth century. The building was restored in the 1870s and the south porch and the flint and brick west tower are Victorian. It would seem that the churchyard was newly fenced and saplings planted as part of the restoration scheme. Close by the church are farm buildings, reflecting the agricultural character of this small parish.

The photograph is one of a series which appears to have been taken to record the restoration work of the 1870s.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
