Photograph of Cheriton Mill, Cheriton

Taken about 1870

Cheriton lies in the Itchen valley about seven miles east of Winchester. Its water mill is mentioned in the Bishop of Winchester's records for 1210 when it was known as Sevington Mill as it was then part of Sevington Manor. It later passed into the hands of the Tichborne family.

The brick building with its steep-pitched tiled roof housed an undershot waterwheel. The miller in his light-coloured clothes obligingly looks out for the photographer.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album entitled 'Hampshire Views of Churches, Country Houses and Public Buildings'.
