Winchester Lodge served the extensive Stratton Park Estate which was the subject of a 'Red Book' by the landscape gardener Humphrey Repton in 1801. Among his proposals was the complete replacement of the main house, but Sir Francis Baring preferred less sweeping changes, instead commissioning George Dance the younger to draw up proposals for alterations to the house. The design of Winchester Lodge reflects the Greek Revival style adopted by Dance; he also designed London Lodge and several estate cottages.
The lodge keeper, a bonnet and jacket protecting her from the autumn weather, holds open the gate.
The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
