Photograph of the windmill at Owslebury

Taken about 1870

The village of Owslebury lies on high ground, and for thirty years was served by the windmill seen here, which was built in 1870 not far from the centre of the village beside the lane leading to Longwood. At the end of its relatively short working life grinding grain the structure was demolished, and many of the bricks were re-used in the construction of two new houses in the village.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
