Photograph of Woodcote Manor, Bramdean

Taken about 1870

The ancient Manor of Woodcote is found in the parish of Bramdean about nine miles east of Winchester. The house seen here, which lies to the east of the village, dates from 1633 although it was built around an older house and was subsequently altered - the sash windows are of the eighteenth century. It was known for its beautiful grounds, and the area of the garden shown in this image is full of flowers. In the mid-nineteenth century it was occupied by General William Cooper Coles.

The photograph was taken by Winchester photographer William Savage (1817-87) and is found in an album of his work.
