Paper Bag, Lanhams Ltd, 1940-1945

A paper bag produced by Lanhams Ltd, Basingstoke, 1940-1945.

In 1913, Edgar Lanham leased the Winchester Street Emporium, a department store from Burberry, and renamed the store as Lanhams Emporium. In 1922 Lanham was able to purchase the site and in the following year, was credited with bringing Christmas to Basingstoke through their Christmas Bazaar. Lanham's department store would develop into Basingstoke's largest department store. During the Second World War, due to ration, reduced imports, and restrictions, Lanhams began urging people to re-use and reduce the need to divert resources from the war effort. These restrictions impacted heavily on department stores such as clothes rationing on 1 June 1941. Eventually, Lanhams would cease trading and become the Thomas Wallis department store in the 1960s.
