Back of the Rising Sun, Bridge Street (Winchester, Hampshire)

Pencil and crayon drawing by C B Phillips, 1912

The back of the Rising Sun public house on Bridge Street, Winchester, viewed from the east. The view shows the timber framing on the rear elevation of the building and Winchester Cathedral tower can be seen in the background and the rear of Chesil Rectory on Chesil Street can be seen in the middle distance.

The Rising Sun dates from around 1600 but was altered in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. However, the cellars are older than the present building and were originally part of the Bishop of Winchester's court in the Soke; the Soke being the administrative area just outside the eastern city walls.
