Excavations in Winklebury took place in the mid-1970s, following planning applications for Fort Hill School finding evidence of occupation during both the Early and the Late Iron Age.
The fragments of this quern stone show that the people living in this settlement were farmers as this stone would have been used to grind grain into flour. This fragment would have been part of a large circle, it would have been placed on top of another large stone circle, the top stone would be rotated graining the grain between the two stone until it was crushed into flour.
The photograph below shows the quern stone, loomweight, and pot sherd in the Basingstoke's My Home exhibition (November 2024-March 2025) celebrating immigration into Basingstoke throughout time.
This object was audited and researched as part of the Heritage Fund Data Hunters and Story Gatherers project.
