Copper-alloy mount

Medieval

Found in the 1970s during excavations by Winchester Museums Archaeology Section at Victoria Road, Winchester, Hampshire

Used for decorating leatherwork, this mount was made from gunmetal, an alloy of copper, tin and zinc. Like another mount on this website, the surface has been silvered using a mercury amalgam. The raised decoration flanking the central hole might possibly represent letters or writing, but, if so, it is now too faint to read.
