Roman copper-alloy umbonate enamelled plate brooch, late1st-mid 2nd Century AD, found at Ovington, Itchen Stoke and Ovington, Hampshire. Hattatt type 128. The dome is decorated with enamel in champleve work. The decoration is a version of the imported sunburst pattern, in which the sun's rays are reduced to a geometric pattern of triangles, the outer zone having blue enamel, the inner alternating blue and red. The decoration survives in part on this example. Chain loop incomplete, as is pin loop. Pin missing. Perhaps had additional knobs, now missing. Light green patina. A fairly common type in Britain.

Enamelled oval plate brooch

Roman, late 1st-mid 2nd century AD

Found with a metal detector at Ovington, Hampshire

This small copper-alloy shield-shaped, or umbonate brooch now lacks its pin. However, it still retains many of the red and blue enamel triangles set into the brooch to create a sun-burst design, which would have glinted in the light when the brooch was new and still shiny. A fairly common brooch type in Roman Britain.
