Silver Coin

A Medieval silver Edward I long cross penny

A silver penny minted in Canterbury between 1279 - 1307 under the rule of King Edward I. Although not the original long cross coinage which stopped production in 1279, this silver penny and many more that come after it still feature a long cross on the reverse. The coins that came before the long cross had a short cross on the back which was the same design however the cross didn't reach the edges of the coin. This meant it was easier to trim the edges of the coin and keep the trimmings for yourself which lowered the value and weight of the original coin. The long cross therefore meant that anyone dealing with coins knew that the edges of the long cross should still be visible for the coin to have its original value.

This coin was unearthed by a metal detectorist around the Winchester area.
