Single Looped Buckle

A complete cast tined copper alloy late Medieval D-shaped buckle

A single looped late Medieval dress accessories buckle, produced from 1350-1450. The buckle is oval and slightly D-shaped with a narrowed and offset strap bar and a raised, barrel molded lip on its outer edge, with a groove for the pin. It has a drawn wire copper pin that is looped around the frame. The decoration is minimal which suggests this small buckle was mainly used for its function rather than fashion. Despite the plain decoration, the off-set and narrowed strap bar indicates that the buckle would have been used for personal dress, as it would have provided a tidier finish for the buckles plate. However, due to this type being of a smaller size and a longer-lasting design, it could have been used for a variety of purposes at that time.

This buckle was unearthed by a metal detectorist around the Winchester area.
