Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye, 1973

A trophy from the Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye, 1973, awarded to Arthur W. Pearce

Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye

The Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye was an event which gathered together a variety of traction engines, vintage vehicles, steam galloping horses, light and heavy horses in an appreciation and celebration of farming and vintage machinery. Alongside the industrial machinery, the rallye hosted a range of fair ground events and hot air balloons providing enjoyment for all visitors with the event being self-proclaimed as:

A show featuring the largest cross section of historic forms of transportation and machinery ever assembled in Great Britain. This is the aim to which members of the Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye committee have been working for four years to assemble today.  Extract from the foreword of the programme from Sir Richard Hyde Parker.

Sir Richard Hyde Parker (1937-2022)

Originally taking place at Great Waldingfield, the rallye moved to Long Melford, belonging to the late Sir Richard Hyde Parker. Parker had a range of community roles such as in the local parish and county councils and becoming the president of the Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye committee. Working with the National Trust for over 50 years, Parker actively aimed to ensure that the hall was saved for future generations. His work and commitment to his local community goes further with 50% of the surplus proceeds being invested to the Restoration Fund of Holy Trinity Church, Melford.

Arthur W. Pearce (1892-1975)

During the third Mammoth Olde Tyme Rally (30 June - 1July 1973), Arthur W. Pearce was awarded this trophy. While we cannot be certain as to the reason why, it is likely related to Pearce's renowned accomplishments in horse ploughing and farming, with this trophy either being a competitive or recognition award. For more information on Pearce, please visit the Arthur W.
