Sunbonnet, women's, mauve checked cotton, deep brim with thirteen rows of close cording, the caul has one band of four rows of close cording with a narrow self frill on either side, the crown is made from a length of the cotton double over and seamed down the centre back, it is then gathered tightly at the top with a narrow band of matching cotton which is threaded through an opening at the top, the material of the bavolet or curtain is continuous with the rest of the bonnet, an internal drawstring of white tape gathers the nape to fit, there are drawstrings of matching checked cotton, much worn and damaged, approximate height overall 390mm, approximate depth 240mm, c1850s
