the distinctive handle terminals and spout have previously been attributed to Melbourne in Derbyshire, but are not now thought to be linked to that pottery; no single source is currently recognised for the so-called Melbourne group
Old label reads; Teapot and cover: pale cream, pearl bead mouldings. The fluted spout moulded with downward-facing acanthus leaves (normally upwards); double intertwined handle, grooved along each edge with triple root and strawberry terminals and the cover with tripple arrowhead leaves and convolvulus knop are features characteristic of a group of teapots, round and and square, decorated with overglaze enamelled chinoiserie in the Derby creamware style. Formerly attributed to Melborne, Derbyshire but probably a Cockpit Hill product on account of their thin yellow-toned glaze which is patchy on the base, c.1775.
