Thatcher's Rake, c.1935

Thatcher's rake with ten iron teeth, c.1935

Thatcher's rake with ten iron teeth and a wooden handle, c.1935. A thatchers rake such as this would have been used only by thatcher's working on long straw, used to tidy up the thatch and clear it of any debris. Long-straw thatching is where the thatch lays on top of a structure and is not driven tightly into place. This would be instead be done with a tool called a legget.
