Thornycroft Depth Charge Thrower

Experimental long range thrower

Photograph of a Thornycroft designed experimental 18 inch long range depth charge thrower which had a 300 yard range being fired on land, possibly at Woolston. The launcher is shown mounted on a firing platform with the loading gear raised. The 18 inch long range depth charge thrower was developed around 1941 and tests were carried out then and in 1942 on HMS Whitehall and HMS Dianella but it was decided that the newly developed 'Hedgehog' was better.
