Tino - William Simpson Teddy Bear Collection

Tino - William Simpson Teddy Bear Collection

This teddy bear was named Tino and belonged to Mr William Simpson, an avid collector of more than 250 teddy bears. Tino wears a green and yellow scarf, red knitted shorts, a cardboard hat, a metal badge from the Chiltern Car Club and a chain with a large daisy pendant around his neck.

Tino is part of a family of teddy bears consisting of Tilly, Rupert, Roberta, Nicholas, Nicola, Lord Meight, and Lady Sidonie. He was purchased in 1953 in Hopkins Toyshop in Eastcote, Middlesex. According to Mr Simpson, he 'was intended to be the motor sporting mascot of the family', partaking in 'motor-racing and many other kinds of motor sport' and always travelling with his owners (indeed, Tino is described by Mr Simpson as 'quite widely travelled'). Tino was lost for several days and suffered some damage after falling out of a car in 1963.

Mr Simpson records that Tino was identified as a Chiltern Bear at a teddy bear fair but 'has never had any label of identification'.
