Velvet Belt

A black velvet belt with embroidered silver and gold Indian decorations.

The belt contains a floral motif with silver and gold coloured threads and bud like shapes. This gives the impression of growth and life contrasted against the dark black velvet. The two bloomed flowers on the edges reflect this as their extending swirl patterns are seen exploding from the flower, likely to develop into the aforementioned bud like shapes. Floral motifs are common throughout Indian textiles, representing both a love of their natural beauty and their symbolic meanings - commonly love, success, and good luck. This design is similar to patterns shown on saree (sari) laces and borders. Considering the size of the belt, the additional stitches alongside the edges, and uneven edges, it is permissible to assume that this was a practice piece for the individual to develop the skills required for more intricate work. Unfortunately, the gold coloured thread has faded in the centre reducing the silver and gold contrast and the impact of the belt's design.
