Bone spindlewhorl

Late Saxon or early medieval

Found during excavations by Winchester Museums Service Archaeology Section at Chester Road, Winchester in the late 1970s

Used to balance the spindle during spinning, this whorl is made from the top of the leg bone of a cow. As such objects are sometimes found unfinished, for example with the hole not fully perforated, it seems that spinners usually made them at home.
