Copper alloy wire

Post-medieval

Found during excavations by Winchester Museums Service Archaeology Section at Chester Road, Winchester in the late 1970s

It was the maker's intention to fashion this wire into sewing- or dress pins, but this has been blundered and the object discarded. These pins were often shaped individually, by wrapping the wire of the shafts around their tops to form heads. Here, however, it seems as if short pieces of wire were wrapped at intervals around a long piece, with the intention of cutting the long piece into separate pins afterwards.
