Roman bone needle from Victoria Road, Winchester.
Bone needle
Roman, probably 1st or 2nd century AD
Found during excavations by Winchester Museums Service Archaeology Section at Victoria Road in the mid- to late 1970s
Roman needles were usually made either of bone or of copper alloy and pointed heads, as here, are invariably of early Roman date. The needle has perhaps been repointed at the other end and is well-polished from use.
