Found during excavations by Winchester Museums Service Archaeology Section at The Brooks site, Middle Brook Street, Winchester in the late 1980s

Used for balancing the spindle during spinning, Roman whorls were usually made of Kimmeridge shale from the Isle of Purbeck.
